CELTH is developing a climate risk scan for destinations together with the Travel Foundation
CELTH, together with the Travel Foundation, is launching an ambitious new research and intervention project: the development of a climate risk scan for destinations that will give them insight into smart interventions that can reduce exposure to climate risks.
CELTH has previously successfully collaborated with the Travel Foundation in ‘Envisioning Tourism in 2030’ en ‘Creating Equitable Destinations’.
About the Travel Foundation and CELTH
The Travel Foundation is an international organisation that wants tourism to have a positive impact on destinations through research, training and coaching. CELTH is the only Center of Expertise in the Netherlands in the field of tourism, leisure and hospitality. With scientifically substantiated and independent practice-oriented research, CELTH wants to contribute to the transformation of the domain towards a sustainable future. The core of CELTH's research programming is the Conscious Destinations Agenda. CELTH expressly chooses the destination level because that is where all the different subsectors and actors come together. The Destination Risk Scan fits perfectly into CELTH's research program, and the team is excited to work with the Travel Foundation again.
What do climate risks mean for destinations?
This project comes at a crucial time: major companies are now required to report on their climate risk under new regulations. But what does this mean for destinations? Investors, tour operators, insurers, employment agencies, airlines and others will consider climate risk when making decisions, which directly impacts the tourism future of destinations.
In addition to an industry report, the project also produces an online tool and a serious game with which destinations can explore intervention options. In addition to researchers from Breda University of Applied Sciences, European Tourism Futures Institute and Wageningen University & Research, students from the BSc Tourism Program also participate in the research.
