Video analytics: exploring possibilities and applications in the leisure economy
There is a high demand for specific data when it comes to visitors. Insights in numbers, distribution in time and space is information that is useful for companies, organisations and governments to coordinate their strategies. Nowadays, places are full of cameras (airports, cities, shops) that continuously monitor visitors. This video data potentially offers numerous possibilities for the use of video analytics. The state-of-the-art technology allows algorithms and deep learning to recognise individuals and create data based on visual material.
Our research aims to explore under which conditions it is possible to use video analytics for analysing visitor numbers and flows. The results of our research will give stakeholders (DMOs, municipalities, city centre management, festival organisers, commercial clubs, outdoor space operators) a picture of the possibilities, impossibilities and associated conditions that people should consider when using video data. The results from this project will be practical, divisible and scalable.
The project is part of the Data & Development Lab in which CELTH cooperates with NBTC and CBS.
