CELTH experts give workshops in Indonesia

Several experts from the colleges affiliated with CELTH are in the Indonesian region of Lake Toba this week. They give workshops and training courses to entrepreneurs on the IT Del campus. The theme of the training is adding value to food systems in the region through tourism.

What is Lake Toba?

Lake Toba is a large crater lake in North Sumatra. The area is being developed touristically and should become one of the new Balis. CELTH has been involved in this region for several years with a Living Lab. The aim is to realise sustainable tourism development in the North Sumatra region together with stakeholders. Previously, Dutch, and Indonesian students started reducing waste and employees were trained in drawing up business plans.

Who gives the training?

This time Guido Aerts (BUas), Erdinç Çakmak (Buas), Jasper Heslinga (CELTH/NHL Stenden), and Herman Jan Meijers (BUas / University of Kent) traveled from the Netherlands to Indonesia. The training is an initiative of CELTH, IT Del University, Nuffic Neso Indonesia, Dutch Ambassy and Lake Toba Tourism Authority.

What do entrepreneurs learn?

The students are trained in Value Chain Analysis (VCA). This is a practical tool used in development studies to identify and map the interrelationships within value chains. This technique is combined with sustainable, circular, and market-based interventions (MBVs) to develop tourism in the region sustainably. The course participants are also introduced to Alexander Osterwalder's Canvas Business Model, and attention is paid to women's entrepreneurship. On the last day, the trainees must present a service or product in a 'Dragon's Den setting' that gives a positive impulse to the value chain in the region.
